Become a foster

Are you ready to make a lasting impact on a cat's life? Consider becoming a cat foster parent. As a foster, you provide a safe and loving temporary home for cats in need. By opening your heart and home, you give them a chance to heal, socialize, and prepare for their forever homes.

Letting a cat stay in your home while it finds an adoptive family is a very rewarding, but can sometimes be a challenging experience, so please read the information below before submitting an application.

Fostering role

As a foster parent, you will work closely with the rescue to be sure your cat(s)/kitten(s) is ready for adoption, both medically and socially.

At its core, foster families are required to provide a comfortable, clean, loving space for their foster cat(s). They should be given two meals a day, (we can provide food), have access to fresh water and a clean litter box.

It is important that as a foster you understand the risks and responsibilities that fostering entails. If you have other pets, the foster cats should be kept in a separate room or space from your animals at all times until they are spay/neutered, tested for contagious diseases, treated for parasites, vaccinated and proven to be able to co-exist with other animals.

fostering process

Fosters should spend time with their foster cats by playing with or petting them. In some cases, foster cats might be shy or under-socialized and in need of additional one-on-one time to help them build confidence and have a greater chance at finding an adopter.

Once a foster cat is medically-cleared for adoption, foster parents should share photos, videos and information about their foster cat's personality likes and dislikes so that we can find the perfect adoptive home for them.

applying to foster

We are only looking for individuals that can commit to being a long-term foster, which usually requires a 3-8 week commitment per cat/kitten/litter. If you are interested in a foster-to-adopt scenario, please include that in your application.

Please Note:

  • We cannot guarantee that we will have a cat/kitten to place with you. If your application is approved, you will be contacted if we require your assistance.

  • Fosters are not paid wages or a salary. This is a volunteer-only position

  • All fosters must commit to fostering only for Coastal Cat Rescue. This is standard for many animal shelters/rescues and helps to prevent un-vaccinated and un-tested animals from mingling with the foster animals.
